Protective capacitor

protective capacitor/ RC sunbber

The protective capacitor is a special type of capacitor used in power systems to help protect equipment from voltage surges. These surges can happen during switching operations or due to lightning (atmospheric overvoltage).

To enhance its function, the capacitor is often combined with a high-voltage resistor in series. This combination is called an RC snubber, and it’s particularly effective at absorbing high-energy spikes caused by switching, especially when using vacuum circuit breakers.

Installation Environment

This capacitor is built to perform reliably in demanding environments. Here are the recommended conditions:
      🌡️ Temperature: -40°C to +40°C
      💧 Humidity: Up to 95%
      🗻 Altitude: Below 1000 meters
🌬️ Environment: Clean, with no corrosive gases, steam, dust, or strong vibrations
When used as an RC snubber, the capacitor is usually connected with:
      A 200W or higher high-voltage resistor
A resistance value of 100 ohms
This resistor can be installed above the capacitor’s bushing — just make sure it doesn’t apply **mechanical stress** to the bushing.
⚠️ Note: The resistor’s value and power rating can be customized based on actual conditions.

Performance Features

✅ Operates at up to 1.2 × rated voltage continuously
✅ Withstands up to 1.5 × rated current, even with harmonics or minor voltage fluctuations
      ✅ Low energy loss: tan δ ≤ 0.001
      ✅ Capacitance tolerance: ±10%
✅ Compliant with Technical Standard 0A527.106
